Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to question certain calls from the official, echoing the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
