A comprehensive rescue and recovery operation is presently under way in the Caribbean waters for two missing sailboats transporting aid cargo traveling from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Naval Search and Rescue Operations Launched

The Mexican government has dispatched naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the missing boats, which were had on board no fewer than nine sailors, according to a military release.

The vessels had been scheduled to arrive in Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their docking, authorities reported.

Context of Aid to the Nation

Cuba has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country endures multiple power outages across the country.

"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and each boat are equipped with suitable safety systems and emergency beacons," a spokesperson for the convoy commented.

The nine-person crew are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"The group is collaborating completely with the officials and remain confident in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the statement continued.

Earlier Humanitarian Shipment

Previously that week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and warmly received another boat that had transported 14 tons of donated goods to the island.

That ship, nicknamed "a new Granma" following the name of the vessel in which Castro returned to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, carried solar equipment, medicines, infant formula, cycles and provisions.

Wider Political Backdrop

Volunteers and NGOs have largely spearheaded initiatives to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the country was initiated.

The United Nations have since highlighted ""severe" shortages of supplies, with in excess of fifty thousand operations cancelled in Cuba because of energy rationing.

Foreign policy pressure have been ramped up over the past months, with remarks from different officials emphasizing the complex state of relations.

In response to recent proposals, a high-ranking government figure stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of discussions commenced, although their ongoing development remains unclear.

The Mexican navy said it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its disposal to find the boats and ensure the safety of the people on board.

As of now, there has been silence on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
