New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key policy, was not quick to announce this decision right away following his electoral win in November.

"This decision rested on our family's safety and the need to directing my complete efforts on enacting the affordability agenda voters elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district famous for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will always live inside me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

But his opponents, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment although he is from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a venue for official events, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment very different than his modest Astoria apartment.

Featuring butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Within, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing outpaces the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
