The Gunners' Disputed Partnership Agreement with Visit Rwanda Set to End Next Year

Arsenal Football Club has confirmed that its much-debated sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda will expire in June this upcoming year.

Context and Criticism

The partnership, reportedly valued at around ÂŁ10m per year, was first established and has since been heavily criticized.

This criticism arises from the country's reported backing for the M23 forces in persistent fighting in the eastern part of the bordering Congo.

Months ago, Arsenal faced allegations of delivering an "outrageous" snub to the government of the DRC by failing to convene with the DRC's foreign minister to discuss the partnership.

Agreement Framework and Goals

Visit Rwanda serves as a division of the Rwanda Development Board, which is a public entity.

It is widely believed that Arsenal entered into and maintained this partnership primarily to expand their fanbase in Africa.

Nevertheless, the partnership has now terminated after both parties “jointly decided” to end their collaboration.

“Together, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the primary aims of the partnership – supporting environmental protection and sustainable tourism, encouraging numerous followers to visit the nation, and establishing a durable base for travel industry expansion,” stated an official Arsenal statement.

The announcement added that the partnership has also aided Rwanda's objective to emerge as an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and welcome more worldwide tournaments while implementing grassroots football initiatives that have helped hundreds of young players and coaches improve their techniques and encourage more involvement in sport across the country.

Management Opinion and Fan Backlash

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, described the partnership as a “major expedition” and asserted it had been “propelling” the club's ambitions.

However, this perspective was not shared by a segment of the club's followers, with the protest movement Arsenal Peace Advocates demonstrating outside the North London venue during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against Paris Saint-Germain in the end of April.

Activists unveiled a sign stating “Terminate the Visit Rwanda Partnership” and distributed armbands to hide the partnership emblem on kits.

Broader Context and Other Clubs

In the same month, PSG continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda through 2028.

Meanwhile, the Spanish club signed a fresh deal for the same period that has resulted in the branding featured on the La Liga side's men's and women's shirts.
