Nicolas Sarkozy Set to Write Jail Diary Chronicling Two Dozen Days Incarcerated

The ex-president of France will soon publish a memoir this autumn called Notes from a Cell, which recounts his time spent in custody.

The announcement was made shortly following Sarkozy was released as his appeal proceeds the court ruling for unlawful coordination in a case to obtain presidential race money linked to the regime of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Inside jail visibility is limited, and activities are scarce,” he writes in one passage, implying the book will focus on his reflections during isolation rather than a broader observation regarding the packed and crisis-hit French prison system.

“Silence escapes me, not present in that facility, where one hears a lot to hear,” he continues. “The noise unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, inner life is strengthened while incarcerated.”

Release Hearing: Recounting the Hardship

At his release request hearing, the former leader was present remotely from inside the facility, describing his time inside as exhausting. He stated to the judge: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, and who have made this ordeal manageable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I didn’t expect that at 70 years of age, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s an ordeal I must endure. I admit it’s difficult, it’s very hard. It has an impact on any prisoner because it’s gruelling.”

First of Its Kind

He, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, was the first past president from the EU and the first leader since WWII in the French Republic to be incarcerated.

Before entering jail he mentioned he would use his time to compose an account.

Reading Material

It remains unclear if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the volumes he brought with him: a life story of Jesus spanning two books together with Dumas’s work the classic tale, where a blameless person ends up incarcerated later flees to seek vengeance.

Daily Reality

Sarkozy was held in isolation for his own security in a room of about nine sq metres with his own shower and toilet at La Santé prison in Paris. Guards occupied the next cell.

It was stated that he consumed solely dairy snacks during his stay worried that any food may have been contaminated. He had facilities to cook for himself but refused this, based on unnamed sources. It is uncertain if the memoir includes meals during incarceration.

Legal Perspective

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who visited his client every day throughout the jail term, stated during proceedings his safety would improve released than inside. “There were death threats, heard shouts during nighttime and emergency responses in an adjacent room during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Case Background

Sarkozy went to prison in late October after a French court sentenced him to five years in prison for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to secure election financing for his 2007 presidential race.

He denies wrongdoing and is contesting the ruling, and another court case set for the coming spring.
