Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
Securing the German international comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
