Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with five in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
