US air traffic controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid during the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," the official informed Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been absent, leading terminals to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks due to weather and additional factors.

More than three thousand US flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary said he expects the situation to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy remarked in an discussion on a weekend program, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their concerns directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Can I drive Uber, am I able to find another source of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary added that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airports said flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - among the peak since the shutdown started.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second-longest shutdown in history.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would reduce the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his conversation, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was secure to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to controllers.

"I require my controllers concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at their households," the official said.

On Sunday, certain flights were stopped at LAX due to employee deficits, leading to disruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as other flights stretching upward to the city of Oakland, California.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert went out at 8:45 AM local time on the weekend. Many flights were back on schedule before noon.

Travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were postponed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the authority said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airport in the country, could encounter problems from reduced staff in the afternoon.

The agency advised passengers in the state to consult airlines about updated departure times.

The issue precedes Game 3 of the World Series, which is scheduled in LA on Monday night, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest times to fly in the United States.

Pressure on American aviation contributed to ending a government shutdown in 2019. At the time, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and affected flight services, including aviator instruction.

It prompted several air traffic controllers to remain absent on the same day on 25 January 2019, temporarily stopping travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, Donald Trump, who at the period was in his first term as president, agreed to sign a short-term spending bill, effectively ending the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
