Crew Member Discloses Depression Following Deluge of Backlash After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a online statement, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has focused her career on female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the mission, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the edge of space.
The team of pioneers also comprised accomplished professionals from different industries.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
