Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Flavor
One of the co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced that he plans to personally create the controversial flavor as part of an individual series highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's was barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Founders versus Parent Company
The recent announcement escalates the ongoing tension among the world-famous ice cream maker and Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant which has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed how the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Flavor as an Emblem for Support
Mr. Cohen revealed via social media that he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas regarding naming options and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen stated from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become an emblem of support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company that originally established in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes plus Future Plans
The founder indicated that he plans to create other frozen dessert varieties that address concerns which the company was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years with the organization, citing worries that the company's autonomy had been undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to keep working inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can fulfill the social mission, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
