In a recent appearance, actor Jude Law remarked he had no concerns about backlash for playing Vladimir Putin in a cinematic adaptation. The movie, however, could coincide too neatly with the mythologized image promoted by official channels that, within Russia, it reads as a compliment rather than a challenge.

The Manufactured Strongman

Over a long period, the Kremlin and its pop-culture machine have worked together to forge a tailor-made version of the president. This figure is an infallible strategist without age or mistakes, a former spy reframed as a local 007 who consistently understands more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a television show released last fall, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “save” Russia from chaos. Although the character's name a different name, the implication is clear: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions often end up buttressing this identical story rather than undercutting it. A new film based on a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the leader's mythology by framing him not as a cause but as a symptom, moving the focus to the spin doctors around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

In the film, the president is shown as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to steady the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to become president. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the background, desiring permanent power.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. Historically, these events took place.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one ever begged him to accept the role. The position was effectively a casting call with many contenders. Central to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who planned to control the state de facto.

• The shortlist featured several politicians, including a reformer subsequently assassinated and a security service director.
• According to a journalist who studied Putin’s biography, the future president simply fitted the necessary criteria: loyal, from the security services, and not a communist or a liberal.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Analysts concur that the image of him as a master operative was built after the fact. Stories about his clandestine activities in East Germany fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he was an administrator and routine duties, a mid-level functionary not engaged in field operations.

Curiously, the move to depicting him as a “spy” could partly have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s arrival as 007. The grittier interpretation led local outlets and social media to draw visual parallels with Putin. Mashup posters swapping the actor's likeness with Putin’s surfaced on Moscow streets, feeding the growing tendency to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an actor popular with viewers there, the authorities will not miss the chance to portray this choice as a small victory. Its exclusion of mass protests, the political rivals, or prominent activists in the story, despite covering the past decade, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.

In Russian cinema, Putin is frequently an omnipotent figure who never appears directly. His influence is signaled through photographs or orders from on high. In this new film, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently echo the very myths it perhaps aims to examine.
